Going to the dentist is the correct thing to do but sometimes it can be easier just to use alternative methods. What do you use?

I’m operating under the assumption that all dentists are not equal – that some are more skilled and more ethical. How do I go about choosing the best dentist? What I mean by skill should be obvious. What I mean by ethical is someone who will not tell the patient that he or she needs an unnecessary service / someone who will not overcharge for their services / etc. Do those dentists who charge less for their services possess less skill? If a practice has multiple dentists, are you able to request a specific one?

I went to the dentist and was told I would need a root canal and crown. I believe his fee is very high. I was wondering if I could get estimates from other dentists. Is it ok to call around and ask what other dentists would charge for the same procedure?

I am a little nervous about having a tooth pulled on Thrusday. It will be the first time and hopfully the last, what type of meds will the dentist prescribe for pain? How long will the pain last because I am scduduled for 9am and I need to return to work the same day?

My husband is in need of major dental surgery and we have no dental insurance. He is in pain all the time but honestly, who can afford a regular dentist, especially with all the work he has to have.
