Dental Healthcare
Posted by: | Comments
Dental healthcare is an important part of a person’s life. Keeping your teeth clean and healthy can prevent a mess of problems down the road regarding your teeth, gums and lips. A healthy dental cavity can mean the difference between surgery, implants, crowns, having teeth pulled and the use of dentures. To keep your gums and teeth healthy you must brush at least twice a day, in the morning and at night, use floss, mouth wash, and see your dentist every six months for a regular cleaning and checkup.
Dentists Prevent a Host of Potential Problems
Dental healthcare is vitally important to a person’s well being and the overall care of their mouth cavity. Dentists, with the help of their dental assistants, can prevent the majority of these dental problems with routine visits to the office:
-Cavities
-Plaque
-Toothaches
-Gingivitis
-Malocclusion
-Halitosis (bad breath)
-Periodontitis
-Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
-Xerostomia (dry mouth)
All of these conditions and problems can be avoided with regular visits to your dentist’s office, brushing your teeth regularly, using mouthwash and floss.
Advice and Instructions Offered by Dentists
Dentists, like all other doctors, are important to the health and well being of people. They take care of the dental cavity known as the mouth. They are responsible for helping their patients maintain a clean and healthy mouth including teeth, the gums, the tongue and the even the lips. Dentists offer their patients a lot of advice and various instructions when in the office on how to properly care for their teeth and gums including:
-Avoid chewing tobacco and tobacco in general
-Brush your teeth at least twice per day in the morning and at night. Brush your teeth after a meal if need be
-Use floss on a regular basis to remove food and plague from in between teeth
-When brushing: make sure you angle the brush down onto the gums for the bottom row of teeth and upwards onto the top row of teeth to properly clean the gums of any plaque
-Use mouthwash. Mouthwash will help to kill the germs in the mouth that live on the tongue and the gums that cause bad breath.
-Avoid a lot of sugary foods, which can lead to tooth decay if not taken care of properly
Procedures and Cleanings
Dentists and dental assistants have a number of different procedures and cleanings that take place in the office. They include a routine cleaning; where the dental assistant will scrape the teeth with a tool to remove all of the built-up plaque, brush the teeth with an electric, rotating brush and then floss the teeth and gums. Other procedures also include x-rays. X-rays must be taken every 12 months of the upper and lower jaw to make sure there are no cavities developing on any of the teeth. Another procedure performed in the office is having a mold done of the mouth. The patient will bite down on a gummy mold to make an imprint with their teeth. This is used to determine whether or not a patient needs corrective surgery down for an under-bite or an overbite. They are also used for determining whether or not a patient needs braces.
Finding the Right Dentist
Posted by: | Comments
Finding a dentist, like finding any other doctor, can be a difficult process. You don’t want to choose just any old doctor or dentist, but the one that will take care of you and your family in the best possible way. The dentist you choose should make you feel comfortable and relaxed while in their office and should make your children enjoy their visits as well. Finding the right dentist is like finding the right new car; it can be a long process but at the end, you know you made the right selection.
The Need for Finding a Dentist
There are a variety of reasons for having to find a new dentist:
-You have moved to a new house and it is too far from your old dentist
-Your current dentist retired
-Your current dentist moved his practice and it is too far from your home
-You are unhappy with the work that your current dentist is performing on you and your family members
These are all valid reasons for having to find a new dentist.
The Search for a Dentist
The search for a dentist can be difficult and trying. It takes more than just browsing through the Yellow Pages, closing your eyes, pointing your finger at a phone number and saying ‘That’s my new dentist.’ Finding a dentist takes time and effort. Beginning with the Yellow Pages is a good start but don’t stop there. Ask around. Ask your brothers, your sisters, your parents, your coworkers, your friends and your neighbors who their dentist is and if they are accepting new patients. Ask them their opinion of their current dentist. Conduct an interview session with these people to narrow down the possible choices.
Meeting the Prospective Dentist
Once you have constructed a list of possible candidates begin making appointments with those dentists for the sole purpose of interviewing them and gathering information about their education, their career and their practice. Is there more than one dentist at the practice? How flexible are the hours? Are they interested in continued education within the field of dentistry? How does the dentist sterilize the equipment? What are his beliefs and ethics as a doctor? While scheduling this appointment, make sure you inform the receptionist that the meeting is solely for informational purposes and you will not be making a decision on the spot.
Making the Switch
Making the switch to a new dentist should be relatively easy once you have completed the search and the interview process. Request that your current dentist send all of your records to the new dentist. Also, have your complete medical history sent to the new dentist so he or she knows what medicines you might be allergic to, if you can be placed under general anesthesia for procedures and any other dental or nasal conditions you have had in the past.
Insurance
The biggest factor in finding a new dentist is insurance. Check with your insurance company before deciding on your new dentist. Not all doctors are included in every healthcare plan. If the dentist you choose isn’t represented in your healthcare plan then you won’t be able to have them as your dentist.
